CHILDREN'S DENTISTRY FAQ’S

1. When should my child first visit the Dentist?
It is important not to wait until your child first experiences tooth ache to visit us. A child’s first dental check-up should begin after the eruption of their first tooth.

2. When should I start caring for my child’s teeth?
Proper dental care should begin before your child’s first tooth appears. It is important to remember that just because their teeth are not seen, doesn’t mean they are not there. At birth your baby has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw.

Running a damp washcloth over your baby's gums following feedings can prevent buildup of damaging bacteria. Once your child has a few teeth showing, you can brush them with a soft child's toothbrush or rub them with gauze at the end of the day.

3. What should I do if my child is complaining of tooth ache?
In some instances even the most diligent brushing and flossing will not prevent a cavity. Please contact West Hills Family Dentistry Center as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

4. Is thumb sucking harmful?
Thumb sucking can lead to problems with the normal growth and development of the mouth and tooth alignment. Children should stop sucking by the time their front permanent teeth start erupting by age six.

5. What should I do if my child’s baby tooth is knocked out or chipped?
Baby teeth are usually not put back in the mouth but we should see your child to determine if any roots remain or any teeth or other structures have been injured. Please contact West Hills Family Dentistry Center as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.
